In the contemporary world, the ubiquity of data is inescapable; since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, our exposure to it has increased dramatically: we are given daily updates on infection and mortality statistics, receive news about vaccination rates, are asked for our body temperature, and are held accountable for the places and people we have visited. Information has become a ubiquitous force in our lives: it is collected (even without our consent), requested, shared, traded, analyzed, used, and collected again – how do we understand our relationship with information in the contemporary world?
Statistics has been considered a state science since early modernity. Today multiple sources and methodologies have complexified the subsistence of data in the world: graphs, simulations, databases, models and algorithms constitute some of the bases that the exhibited artists have used to support their research. Artifacts arises from a reflection on the human action of «creating»: an etymological consideration leads to the Latin ars factum, «art made»; the result of this action consists of objects of human significance carried out by artifex («makers», «artists») that become meaningful in contexts of human significance.
Artifacts is articulated around the ubiquity of information and data, and our relationship with them in the contemporary world. Using different formats and volumes of figures, data and metrics, the artists approach the issues raised by the inexhaustible circulation of information today from a perspective that questions its use by the state to control, regulate or discipline society, while examining its relationship to the social and individual body.
En el mundo contemporáneo es ineludible la omnipresencia de los datos; desde el inicio de la pandemia por COVID-19 se incrementó dramáticamente nuestra exposición a ellos: se nos ofrecen actualizaciones diarias sobre estadísticas de contagio y mortalidad, recibimos noticias sobre índices de vacunación, se nos solicita nuestra temperatura corporal y rendimos cuentas sobre los lugares y las personas que hemos visitado. La información se ha convertido en una fuerza ubicua en nuestras vidas: es recolectada (aun sin nuestro consentimiento), solicitada, compartida, comerciada, analizada, usada, y recolectada de nuevo – ¿cómo entender nuestra relación con la información en el mundo contemporáneo?
La estadística ha sido considerada una ciencia de estado desde la modernidad temprana. Hoy en día múltiples fuentes y metodologías han complejizado la subsistencia de los datos en el mundo: gráficos, simulaciones, bases de datos, modelos y algoritmos constituyen algunas de las bases que los artistas expuestos han utilizado como sustento de sus investigaciones. Artifacts surge de una reflexión sobre la acción humana de «crear»: una consideración etimológica conduce al latín ars factum, «arte hecho»; el resultado de dicha acción consiste en objetos de significancia humana llevados a cabo por artifex («hacedores», «artistas») que cobran sentido en contextos de significación humana.
Artifacts se articula alrededor de la ubicuidad de la información y los datos, y nuestra relación con ellos en el mundo contemporáneo. Haciendo uso de diferentes formatos y volúmenes de cifras, datos y métricas, los artistas se acercan a las problemáticas planteadas por la inagotable circulación de información en la actualidad desde una perspectiva que cuestiona su utilización por parte del estado para controlar, regular o disciplinar a la sociedad, al tiempo que examinan su relación con el cuerpo social y el individual.

Barbara Krulik
Art historian, curator, writer, cultural manager. She has served in New York as an assistant director of the National Academy of Design, as an assistant director of Forum Gallery, and as Director of the postgraduate school of Figurative Art of New York Academy of Art. Krulik Cultural Consultant Services. She currently lives and works in Ámsterdam, as a owner and director of Krulik Cultural Consultant Services. She is a member of the committee of curators of the American Alliance of Museums and the Biennal Association.
Historiadora del arte, curadora, escritora y gestora cultural. Se ha desempeñado en Nueva York como directora asistente de la National Academy of Design, como directora asistente de Forum Gallery, y como directora de la Escuela de Posgrados en Arte Figurativo de New York Academy of Art. Actualmente vive y trabaja en Ámsterdam, como dueña y directora de Krulik Cultural Consultant Services. Pertenece al comité de curadores de la American Alliance of Museums y a la International Biennial Association.
Mildred Durán
Researcher in contemporary art, art critic and independent curator. She has a PhD in contemporary art in Latin America from the Panthéon-Sorbonne University. She has worked at the Georges-Pompidou Center, in exhibitions such as Au-delà du spectacle, Les années Pop and Jean Dubuffet. Her articles have appeared in publications such as Le cahiers du CNAM, Inter, art actuel, Les publications de la Sorbonne, among others. Currently, she is a member of the editorial committee of the Inter, art actuel de Quebec magazine.
Investigadora en arte contemporáneo, crítica de arte y curadora independiente. Tiene un doctorado en arte contemporáneo en América Latina de la Universidad Panthéon-Sorbonne. Ha trabajado en el Centro Georges-Pompidou, en exposiciones como Au-delà du spectacle, Les années Pop y Jean Dubuffet. Sus artículos han aparecido en publicaciones como Le cahiers du CNAM, Inter, art actuel, Les publications de la Sorbonne, entre otras. Actualmente es miembro del comité editorial de la revista Inter, art actuel de Quebec.
